Every sunrise for a week, I wandered through Venice on foot, exploring the different neighborhoods before eventually making my way to Dorsoduro. There, along the edge of the lagoon, I found this view across the water toward the Redentore. I went back to photograph it a few times after that.
There was something wonderful about seeing Venice this way—this was just after the world had begun to open up again, and being able to lose myself in the city while it was still unusually peaceful felt like a rare gift.
Dorsoduro is one of Venice's great art districts, filled with historic churches, museums, palaces, and quieter corners along the water. Across the Giudecca Canal, the Church of the Santissimo Redentore was designed by Andrea Palladio and commissioned by the Venetian Senate after the devastating plague of 1575–1577. Completed in 1592, it became the center of the annual Festa del Redentore, one of Venice's most important traditional celebrations.
