I photographed this during a morning walk while traveling through France in 2024. Semur-en-Auxois quickly became one of my favorite stops along the road trip—the kind of place where wandering without a particular destination feels like the best way to explore.
The town sits dramatically on a granite promontory surrounded on three sides by a bend of the Armançon River. Its natural defenses were strengthened during the Middle Ages with imposing walls, towers, and a fortified keep. Much of that medieval character remains today in its winding cobblestone streets, stone buildings, half-timbered houses, and ancient ramparts.
I love how this photograph captures a quieter side of the town: an antique shop tucked into the historic streets, where everyday life continues within a setting that feels wonderfully unchanged.
