A handful of us entered Pompeii first thing in the morning. As someone whose “Roman Empire” is, in fact, the Roman Empire, I was mesmerized, astounded, and absolutely gleeful at the opportunity to experience this ancient city.
We had chosen to visit after the world reopened, hoping to experience Pompeii calmly, before the crowds arrived. Being there in the quiet of the morning felt almost surreal. Later in the day, I got to see the same streets transformed into a much more crowded, bustling place, which gave me a strange glimpse of Pompeii as both a peaceful place of observation and a real town full of people.
Pompeii was buried beneath volcanic ash and debris during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79, preserving an extraordinary glimpse into everyday Roman life—from homes and shops to streets, gardens, and public spaces.
This trip also became an important moment in my own creative practice. Somewhere between Naples and Greece, I discovered watercolor and began falling in love with sketching.
